Billy’s first foray behind the Iron Curtain in 1986 coincided with a thaw in the Cold War. The chatter at the East Berlin Festival of Political Song was all about Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s use of the terms perestroika and glasnost. The general feeling was that this would herald a new period of cultural openness in Russia, a notion borne out by the invitation that Billy received to tour the Soviet Union in November 1987.
‘Midnights in Moscow’ is the story of that trip, told by Chris Salewicz with over 75 photos by Adrian Boot. Originally published in 1989, a box of copies in very good condition has been discovered in Billy’s basement, these are extremely limited in number and are now being made available on a first-come-first served basis.
