Episode 12: William Bloke
Ten years on the road, temporary health problems, and a burgeoning relationship lead Billy to re-think his life and career. Then Billy’s partner, Juliet, falls pregnant and Billy knows everything really has changed for good.
Eventually he writes William Bloke - an album that reflects fatherhood, the end of Margaret Thatcher and of the Soviet Union - and replaces Marxist ideology with Socialism of the Heart.
The songs on these podcasts feature on the fabulous Billy Bragg Volume 2 boxed set, available from the Billy Bragg Shop here. (Volume 2 NTSC version suitable for North America and Japan, etc is here).

Hi Billy and Wiggy,
What a great podcast! William Bloke has always been one of my favorite of your albums. I’ve bought it for friends. I saw you when you came to play Detroit, MI for the Detroit Free Press strikers/Sunday Journal. I still remember you telling the story about Jack and what this album meant to you. It was great to hear it more in depth, and to have you talk about your break from playing out and your life and what was going on at the time. You are an inspiration–thanks Billy Bragg.

This is wonderful. I love hearing more about Billy’s home life. I remember being so impressed when he came out with William Bloke that he had somehow seamlessly moved from being “at the barricades” to fatherhood, and he hadn’t lost any of the passion. I’m about 10 years behind Billy age-wise, and it’s nice to get a little intro to what might be upcoming!
It’s cool to have a real life!

Billy, sorry to bust in, but if you’re in the area, the folkpop band ‘Mr Love & Justice’ are playing at the TUC South West regional conference tonight in Croyde.
Worth checking them out if you can.
cheers,
stone.

Just like to say that my partner, daugjhter and I all really enjoyed the concert at the Bristol Colston Hall last night! One of the best we’ve been to for some time. Thanks for all your efforts and keep up the good work!
