Billy Bragg, Roy Harper to get folk awards

The Lifetime Achievement award recipients in this year's BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - the annual awards that celebrate and reward the best in folk music from the previous 12 months - have been announced

Musician Billy Bragg will be awarded the Roots Award - awarded in recognition of an outstanding contribution to Folk Music from a Grass Roots level upwards, Shetland fiddler Aly Bain and English folk/rock singer, songwriter and guitarist Roy Harper (below) will be given Lifetime Achievement Awards and the author of one of Scotland's most loved songs Caledonia, Dougie MacLean, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for Contribution to Songwriting.

Mark Radcliffe and Julie Fowlis will present the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2013 live from the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Wednesday, January 30. Aly Bain, Roy Harper and Dougie Maclean will perform during the ceremony and there will also be live music from Mary Chapin Carpenter and Billy Bragg. Guest presenters on the evening will include Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson, former footballing star and folk music fan Pat Nevin, Green Gartside of the group Scritti Politti and musician Martin Carthy.
