Billy Bragg cancels US tour to mourn mother's death

Iconic singer/songwriter Billy Bragg announced he was cancelling his upcoming US tour on short notice last week after his mother, who was suffering from pancreatic cancer, became gravely ill. Soon after the announcement, Bragg's mother passed.

"After a long and active life and a short illness, my mother Marie passed away yesterday, surrounded by her family," Bragg tweeted Saturday. "Thank you for all the kind sentiments that have been expressed via twitter in the past few days."

In an earlier announcement to his official website, Bragg -- who is responsible for classic songs such as 'A New England' and 'Greetings to the New Brunette' -- stated he was pulling the eight East Coast dates, which were slated to start in Brownfield, Maine, to be with her.

"My mother was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and her health has deteriorated to such a critical extent in the past week that I am now unable to fulfill these dates," Bragg explained. "As her life slips away, I feel that my place is by her side."

There is no word yet on rescheduled dates or refunds.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Billy.
