Britons 'richer than Americans'
The average UK person will this year have a greater income than their US counterpart for the first time since the 19th Century, figures suggest.

Analyst Oxford Economics said the UK's GDP per head of population will reach £23,500 - £250 higher than in the US.

However, because goods and services are cheaper in the US, Americans will have stronger purchasing power, it added.

UK GDP per capita will also be higher than in Germany (£21,665) and France (£21,700), Oxford Economics calculated.

Managing director Adrian Cooper said: "The last 15 years have seen a dramatic change in the UK's economic performance and its position in the world economy.

"No longer are we the 'sick man of Europe'."

Oxford Economics said that in 1993, following the last major recession and the UK's ejection from the ERM, GDP per capita in the UK was 34% lower than in the US, 33% lower than in Germany and 26% lower than in France.

It said the improved UK position reflected the sustained strong growth it has enjoyed since then and the recent strength of sterling.

Mr Cooper said: "The UK has been catching up steadily with living standards in the US since 2001, so it is a well-established trend rather than simply the result of currency fluctuations."

Not for nothing but in my field of work. I could get loads more work and loads more money in the US then in the UK. But then I'd miss my football, my NHS and the real kebabs and curries house. I'd only do seasonal work in the US. Between football seasons that is and world cups and european championships. biggrin.gif

real kebabs and curries house.

Beg your pardon: On Ninth Avenue, we have Afghan restaurants. You can't get more real than that. Our Indian (curry houses) have buffets where you pay a fixed price and you eat as much as you want. I am more into Tandoori myself

No!!!!!!!!!!! laugh.gif I went to all the joint's in NYC (well most of them on Murray Hill aka Curry Hill) No way as good as the real deal UK curry's houses. I went to couple of place in the village. I went to bangladeshi joints in queens, I went to Ali Baba's just before exit 27 on the LIE. They were okay place but not as good as the UK. We did invent many concepts of today's Indian food and curry sauce. The UK is the gold standard tongue.gif

I did love the the famous 53rd and 6th chicken and rice stands. That is the best place for food and value in the world. You have us beat on the street carts.

laugh.gif I know. I think if I get the flight a day after the Champions league final, then if not in a world cup or Euro's year that will be the last game of football till August. When I was in NY this passed summer I missed loads of games and had to pay $20 to get into a pub and watch the FA cup final. I had too time my lunch breaks with catching a half of a champions league games. It was fun bring back a receipt from an Irish pub and explaining why I had lunch there. ( would get $10 for lunch from the production company I worked for)

I'd hazard a guess that this has more to do with the weak dollar than anything else!

I've yet to have Indian food in the US that comes anywhere close to what you can get in the UK!

And equally - have yet to experience Mexican or Chinese food in the UK that's as good as anything I've had in the states..
