What is all this about?

I heard it on the news this morning and a lot of country's representetives where unhappy about it. For my own interest, what exactly has gone on? I was really tired at the time

Lee, you asked such a huge and complicated question, I can't begin to answer. You should go to the guardian site and read the link that accompany the main story.

Suffice it to say when a rogue country is testing nuclear weapons against the world's opinion (and on this one, all nations agree) we are all in danger.

I'm sure the KLF will have some nuggets of wisdom to impart.

I reckon the Chinese might knock off The Dear Leader.

Reports from Swedish scientists are saying that its measurement on the Richter scale is fairly low, suggesting it might be a red herring.

But even if it is, it's a dangerous game to play as it could assist in reigniting the nuclear arms race. And that's not good for any of us, anywhere.

The Sun once again asks the question on everyone lips.

What's the question? What the hell crummy scab paper is that?

Nice touch, using a puppet figure from a bad American movie as a graphic.

For all you 'Yanks' out there. It was play on words with regard to a popular British TV show.

There's plenty more puns where that came from.

KLF

I'm sure The Sound of Music is known by our american friends.

Hilarious that your addition to this thread is to simply throw the front page of The Sun at us.

Can't even be bothered to paraphrase what it's saying eh?

KLF, It was a line from the song Maria from the Sound of Music long before it was the name of a BBC TV programme.

QUOTE
How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Maria?
A flibbertajibbit?
A will o' a whisp
A clown

Your knowledge of flamboyant musicals, does surpise me. huh.gif

Do you honestly believe anyone outside of Britain would have got the pun, without my explanation? Punning with an obscure line in a musical, is slightly different from punning a popular program thats just been on national TV. rolleyes.gif

By flamboyant I conclude that you mean gay.

Nice man.

And yes. I think most people would know that line from Maria: there is nothing obscure about the Sound of Music - The Soundtrack to the film was one of the biggest sellers of all time.

To be fair, the Sound of Music was more than just a musical. It was also made into a film. A film which just happened to win five Oscars. A film which following its release became the highest grossing film ever (though it was later replaced by Gone with the Wind, The Godfather and Jaws). A film which is still shown on American TV a few times a year. A film which many Americans have seen numerous times. A film filled with songs that were popular not only because they were performed in the film but also by many other performers in many different venues.

Ultimately, I think most of us got the pun.

"So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye"

(For all you Brits out there, that was a play on words with regard to the final episode of a popular US TV show that, in the end, really bombed)

To the best of my knowledge however, the USA has thus far been spared the experience of "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" a British X-Factor/Fame Academy style reality programme the winner of which wins the chance to star in a West End revival of said musical.
If it is ever remade in the States we will owe you profuse and sincere apologies.
