Well ya know, I'm not aware of "polar bear" being a derrogatory racist slur against white people. Calling black people monkeys IS racist, however, and for a school to be so culturally insensitive as to cast the only two black kids as monkeys is disgusting (BTW, it says in the piece they auditioned for other parts but were turned down, so you've obviously made up the bit about them choosing the parts themselves, in order to make your point stronger. Leeds-steve lying? now there's a shocker).

My daughter's school did a play a few years ago about Christmas around the world. The Chinese characters were face-painted yellow, with slanty eyes. The only two Chinese girls in the year group were not cast as Chinese (presumably because it would be too embarrassing to make them wear racist face paint). Their parents were quite upset by the whole thing, but said nothing because no one wants to be seen as a troublemaker.

So is it better for ethnic minorities to keep such feelings to themselves so that arseholes like you aren't troubled by their "political correctness gone mad", or to speak up when something clearly needs addressing?

If I were the boy's mother, I'd have done exactly the same thing.

Wouldn't it have been natural casting,for the girls to play the chinese parts,but without any make-up.

Perhaps in consideration of future roles, the Chinese girls chose other parts for fear of being geno-typecast.

ashley down is one of the most culturally sensitive areas of the city. locally the school is receiving lots of support. particularly from black kids who attend/have attended the school, and other black parents.

I don't really have a horse in this race, but when you suggest joanie read your article, are you refering to these paragraphs:

If so, I think I read this rather poorly written article a little different than you. I read it as the black boys were given the parts of monkeys, while three white children asked to be monkeys. An important distinction to be sure.

BTW, I played the part of a Monkey in my elementary schools rendition of One Was Johnny. I've got dark skin. I'll leave it at that.

I was a shepherd, a tree, a one of picket pockets in fagin's gang(not oliver, some other git got that role) and one of the Dangerous Brothers..it was a variety show and me and my mate did them and it was off the hook ( i think i was the Adrian Edmondson's one.. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0135086/ ) as i have no kids but loads of nephews, nieces who take part in their school plays (i think one of them even played joseph in the nativity) anyway even if it was required and tastefully done and kids wanted to be a monkey character or any other animal. the last say is down to the parent.. ( if it ever happened) that my nephews, nieces were cast as pigs in a play. my sisters or brother would say to the teacher, as muslims we regard the pig as an unclean animal and my kids emulating them is something that sits uncountably with me. if possible can they be somthing eles. like it or dislike it, it may look like an innocent thing one person but to some it may stink of racism. the last say is down to the parent.

In my experience 7 year olds do not discuss anything with teachers. Teachers tell them what to do and if they're quiet and well behaved they comply. Only when they get home do they sometimes confess to their parent(s) how miserable and humiliated they feel because of what happened at school that day.

And since there seems to be absoluetly no limit on the degree to which members can be viscerally objectionable to other members can I just say that the foul personal attacks by people who really should take their toilet mouths and minds to their own forums is growing more than a little tiresome.

So the teachers are lying and are all racists..yep. As the father of 11 and 7 year old mixed race girls my experience of teachers is they do discuss things very much with there classes issues and things like plays and even what sports they wish to take part in on sports day.

Maybe 30 years ago they didnt but things have moved on old son, time to catch up me thinks.

And from what i have read the "Black" parents who have kids at this school are very much pissed off with this one individual who has gone screaming racism to the press. Hey but lets not talk about that fact eh, it spoils our oportunaty to cry racism at the state yet again...
