someone was v surprised when i said i do no like being referred to as a girl or a lady.
a girl wouold make me under sixteen. - no thankyou.
a lady would make me a "well mannered woman". I am a woman regardless of my social etiquette.
why is the word woman disliked so much and why does it have so many negative connotations? huh.gif mad.gif
itsmeBarbara
That is hilarious, PS.

I have noticed before that some men cannot say the word woman. Since I am no lady (with no aspirations or time to be so) I really hate that one. Since I haven't been a girl in a - while - unless I'm with my oldest friends (known as the girls) cross that one off too. I am a woman, I am. It's great. Say it with me!
Beryl the Peril
i am no lady!

laugh.gif

good topic and i'll come back to it.

meanwhile ... i am referring to the female who is driving me mad at work as 'the girlie'.

thus avoiding the possibility of 'the woman' being misinterpreted and avoiding (at all costs) the use of the word 'lady'.
SallyA
yep - definitely woman - I can't stand lady - with all it's baggage suggesting that women should be polite, demure, defer to men agh - girl can sometimes be OK - from mates I don't mind "what do the girls want [to drink]" and girls night out jsut sounds more fun than womans night out....
but if a stranger refered to me as a girl - I'd see it as patronising and offensive - and I'd probably correct them....
pink shay
its me, btp and sally a youve all made me v happy smile.gif
i find the main offenders tend to be women and when i question them i get called a "bloddy feminist lesbian" biggrin.gif as if thats ment to be some kind of insult. rolleyes.gif
Beryl the Peril
the youngish woman i refer to as the girlie (because i refuse to call her the manager in case she tries to manage me) calls everybody 'darling' or 'my sweet' ... customers and colleagues alike!

i can't stand it!

i told her (in front of a few customers rolleyes.gif ) that only people i was intimately aquainted with could call me sweet and i didn't wish to be intimately aquainted with her thank you (not because she is female, i just can't stand the bitch laugh.gif )

.Regarding the use of the word 'woman'.I have no problem using that phrase.I would never call women over about 35 years old, 'girls'.I would probably call them 'ladies'.

My dad calls everyone 'luv'.I suppose you can get away with that as his age. rolleyes.gif

I don't like the phrases 'bird' or 'missus' either.

edited because my first sentence may have been offensive to P.Shay unsure.gif

Its a turm of casual frendliness. It doesn't mean the person loves you,or considers you his 'luv'.Just as when we say 'mate'. Got the time ,mate It doesn't mean you actually concider them a real mate or friend.

Beryl, take this senario... You are entering a building,a pensioner walks in just behind you.You breifly hold the door open for him to enter. He cheerfully says 'Thanks luv' and smiles at you.

Would you really pull him up and tell him not to call you that? If so, i think that would be rude on your behalf.

Ha.

BOO!
Beryl the Peril
i probably wouldn't kick an oap in the bollocks for calling me luv unsure.gif ... unless he was carrying a copy of the sun. laugh.gif

i don't like passing strangers calling me love but of course i realise that there are generic salutations and a lot depends on context.

For instance a taxi driver who was late and made me miss my train when i'd got up at 4 in the morning did not get away with saying 'sorry love'.

oh no!

on the other hand, if he had been a geordie and said 'sorry pet' i might have had to drag him indoors and give him a snog. I love that accent. But on the other hand i might have said i am not a fuckin' dog rolleyes.gif

i'm a hard woman.

When I first started out as a teacher, far too many years ago, I had ironed the word "girl" out of my vocabulary so meticulously that I found myself once referring to the 7-year-old girls in my class as "women"... True story, and how they rightfully laughed, though at least I got to explain to them why it had happened.

My take on this is that frankly I've been worn down over the years by friends, male and female (including people here, if I may say so), whom I am in tune with politically and whom I respect, using "girl" when they mean "woman".

I used to take people up on it, but painted myself into a corner of over-PC allegations. And me a male too, not really feeling able to challenge when "girl" was used by a woman I know, so I've virtually given up swimming against this particular tide.

Just my two penn'orth.

just bringing this to the top.. before lib starts another new thread.
libertyleadingthepeople
Ow many threads do you want on this topic then? wink.gif

I spoke to my mate on the phone about an hour ago and he is black and from Birmingham. I have banned him from coming here as he wanted to say what he calls his wife. He tried to tell me it was just a term of endearment. I didn't agree.

It seems to be very common for some women here in Denmark to refer to themselves as "piger" (girls) as in "We girls" etc. As a bloke I can't really pull them up on it but it grates on me like hell.

You can call someone you love and are close to what you (and they) like. wub.gif just look at the valentine pages in the grauniad ohmy.gif

that has nothing to do with referring to a roomful of women as ladies.

alberr calls me sweetie, when he is in a cheerful mood. My previous husband called me, and pretty well every other female in the world, darling, which was a tad annoying dry.gif . We refer to tgj's girlfriends as flossie but that's a whole other story rolleyes.gif

women in a group do call themselves girls... it's a girlie thing laugh.gif see sallyA's post back a bit smile.gif

and i use too many emoticons!

I don't know what the fuss is all about.

Girl, Woman, Lady... I find there is one term that unites all females...

Poppet.

I just call females poppet. Seems to unite them.

My mum used to call me poppet... when I was FIVE.

You know at a big boxing match, when the announcer is in the ring at the beginning?
What he (or she) says?

What would be better than what they say?
