Targets – Harvey Andrews

You’ll read it now they’ll tell you how,
The lady is a leader
With hats and curls and strings of pearls
They say the people need her.
She took the milk from my son John
And locked it in her larder
Then said the secret of success
Is ‘work a little harder’

Call us equal call us proud
Call yourself a liar
No matter what the people do
They set the target higher

My girl she nurses sick and old
The builders of the nation
And then they pay a pauper’s wage
And tell her it’s vocation
She’d love to ride the world around
To give the cups and prizes
But someone’s got to lead the blind
And see the cripple rises

Call us equal call us proud
Call yourself a liar
No matter what the people do
They set the target higher

We would have married long ago
And we’re still hoping one day
Two up, two down and a little lawn
And time to rest on Sunday
I wish the ones that kept us here
Could live like us and borrow
I’d place a pound for what it’s worth
That they’d be gone tomorrow.
We’d like a yacht, some rooms to spare
And horses in the stable
We might as well believe that we
Can buy meat for the table.

Apparently Elton John, of all people, has written "Merry Christmas, Margaret Thatcher" for a musical version of Billy Elliott

chorus:
So merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher
May God's love be with you
We all sing together in one breath
Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher
We all celebrate today
'Cause it's one day closer to your death

It is great and pertinent now.

Starts with a voiceover of Maggie and Jello Biafra playing the Secretary for state,
set to guitars
goes in to a diatribe how war is good and the ciorporations think its about time for another one, all the while the Thatcher voice is breathing heavier and heavier until , well she Wargasms:)

Funnily enough they (Hudson/Ford, don't blame Dave Cousins) wrote 'Part of the Union' as a pisstake of unions. More fool them that it got adopted as a 'protest song'.

Yep, thanks for reminding us Pete. I seem to remember they were overwintering in a factory somewhere and got into a spot of bother with the shop stewards which prompted them to write the song.

The Blues Band did a cover of this in the early 80's. They changed the National Guard to the S..P..G. & it is definitely an anti-Thatcher song

It's a bit off topic, but one of my favourite stories. A few years ago Iron Maiden did agig in (I think) Iceland. What is fact is that the group ran a trip to the gig from Britain with Dickinson at the controls of the aircraft ... how un rock'n'roll is that !!
Joanne
Five Get Over Excited by The Housemartins included the following lyrics:

Feigning concern a Conservative pastime
Makes you feel doubtful right from the start
The expression she pulls is exactly like last time
Got to conclude she just hasn't a heart.

Thatcher Fucked The Kids by Frank Turner - www.frank-turner.com

Whatever happened to childhood?
We're all scared of the kids in our neighboorhood;
They're not small, charming and harmless,
They're a violent bunch of bastard little shits.
And anyone who looks younger than me
Makes me check for my wallet, my phone and my keys,
And I'm tired of being tired out
Always being on the lookout for thieving gits.

We're all wondering how we ended up so scared;
We spent ten long years teaching our kids not to care
And that "there's no such thing as society" anyway,
And all the rich folks act surprised
When all sense of community dies,
But you just closed your eyes to the other side Of all the things that she did.
Thatcher fucked the kids.

And it seems a little bit rich to me,
The way the rich only ever talk of charity
In times like the seventies, the broken down economy
Meant even the upper tier was needing some help.
But as soon as things look brighter,
Yeah the grin gets wider and the grip gets tighter,
And for every teenage tracksuit mugger
There's a guy in a suit who wouldn't lift a finger for anybody else.

You've got a generation raised on the welfare state,
Enjoyed all its benefits and did just great,
But as soon as they were settled as the richest of the rich,
They kicked away the ladder, told the rest of us that life's a bitch.
And it's no surprise that all the fuck-ups
Didn't show up until the kids had grown up.
But when no one ever smiles or ever helps a stranger,
Is it any fucking wonder our society's in danger of collapse?

So all the kids are bastards,
But don't blame them, yeah, they learn by example.
Blame the folks who sold the future for the highest bid:
That's right, Thatcher fucked the kids.

Attila has posted the lyrics on this Forum, btw - go here.
Is it done as a song and not a poem, then, just out of interest? It kind of read like a poem.
