Not sure about Flower .... he batted very slowly for Essex in 2005 at Headingley. Normally basmen start slowly & then speed up. Flower started slowly & got slower. As a result Essex didn't have enough time to bowl Yorks out twice & we got a draw.

btwcan I say I'm glad that Moore's has let the England players have games for their counties. My main objection to Fletcher was that he stopped England stars playing so that they were underdone (For a perfect example of this remember Harmison's first ball of the Ashes)

Thing is, he's coaching, not playing, petal.

I just heard Mr Vaughan on Radio 5 Live. 'Virgil' actually talked common sence !! Simon Mayo was asking about Rashid, a young leg bowler who's taking loads of wickets for Yorkshire & is this year's future star. Vaughan answered that whilst Adil's a terrific talent he should be left to learn his game with Yorkshire in the near future ....... thanks Michael :notworthy:

The Old Feller watched Rashid a few times in Bradford when he wor nobbut a lad. He reckoned he has a real talent that should take him to an England cap fairly soon.

The Yorks 'regulars' also think (& hope) that Rashid plays for England as he is a special talent. The only worry is that it's still less than a year since Adil first played for Yorks (in July 2006) & has never had a 'bad patch'. Most Yorkies want Rashid (who's not yet 20) to get used to playing regular cricket, & even have a few failures, before being catapulted into the England limelight. Richard Dawson (an off spinner) was also a great talent, but he got got picked for England too soon & never recovered. Dawson went from being a future Yorkshire captain to being released in 2 to 3 years.

I'm not sure whether the england thing comes into it. yorkshire have a habit of ruining bowlers. steve kirby is one that springs to mind, seeing as he now plys his trade with us, sidebottom the younger another.

besides, didn't dawson develop the yips?

Moster get your facts right.

Steve Kirby was released by Leic and is probably unique in that he made his debut for Yorks in the 2nd innings of a championship game in 2001. The reason was that Hoggard, who'd bowled in the first innings, had been called up for England. Most of the team had never met the bloke. Kirby took 7 wickets & helped us win the championship. The problem was that mild mannered Steve became 'Mad Dog' when they stuck a ball in his hand. The next winter Kirb's got picked for England A who tried to stop 'the antics', bad mouthing batsmen & ending his run almost in a batsman face ... Devon Malcolm started moving down the wicket brandishing his bat when Kirby did this. The problem was that stopping the 'antics' also took away his penetration. It took Yorks half a season to get Kirby bowling properly again, but he never regained the orignal impact. The Yorks dressing room atmospere turned 'bad' & Kirbs left supposedly to further his England chances, but this has never worked out.

Sidebottom officially left because Yorks couldn't guarentee him first team cricket ... we've always thought that there was something else going on but never found out what. Ryan's dad Arnie was also 'let go' that winter which was odd as his 2nd team had done very well. Arnie isnow coach with Rotherham in the Yorks Premier League

Dawson didn't develop the yips. His bowling just went to pieces after the 2002/3 Ashes tour. It was looking as though things were improving after the 2005 20-20 competition when Shoab Acktar didn't like being hit all over & broke Dawson's knuckle with a bouncer. Dawson started the 2006 as Yorks spinner but didn't take many wickets. When Rashid (picked as a batsman) took 7 wickets in his first game against Warwick the writing was on the wall. This year Dawson is at Northants but doesn't appear to be pulling up any trees. I think most Yorks fans wish Daws well as his wickets were important in 2001. All in all a waste of talent due to being picked too early for England

less than half an hour to go before the first test of the summer and, unusually, i am at home to watch it.

i'm so excited i need to have a wee.

windies win toss and put england in. apparently it's a seamers paradise and strauss would have done the same. so a good toss to lose. i'm a firm believer in always having first use

Could Shah end up being Rampakash Mk II .... great in the county game (I remember him hitting Yorks all over in a 1 day game at Southgate) but a relative failure in Test matches

Quote of the day, so far, from Blowers on TMS.

"My dear old thing, shall we do it in tandem for a few minutes ? "

test match cricket is all about temperament. that is why cook looks likely most of the time, whereas shah looks like every ball could get him out.
moster
cook has become the 5th englishman to score 5 hundreds in his first 15 tests. and he's in good company, hammond, hutton, parfitt and strauss.
Andy Larter
Cook seems to have all the shots. I think he's going to be a genuine great. But the powers that be have done everything just right with him. Owais Shah has never been treated like that since he captained a very successful under 19 side. There may be good reasons for that - I know Mike Gatting once said, in not so many words, that he was a big head - but he is a very talented cricketer.
Red Star
Shah will never have a better chance than this match. The poor Windies are extremely under cooked having just had 1 game (that was badly rain affected) since they arrived in England. The bowling so far has been very very average. If the Windies had batted I'm sure that Hoggard & Harmison (both of whom have had a number of games for their county) would have been in the wickets. For years I've been saying that Englnad bowlers don't bowl enough overs, hopefully this match will prove me right when Hoggy/Harmi bowl well.

Yes, there are better players than Shah available.

He'll go down as a decent plunderer of county attacks, but he hasn't got that bit extra that is required. Yeah, he'd make a few decent scores at test level. but he would lack consistency and the ability to do it when it really matters. mentally, he's not there.

It would have been for at least 6 if the West Indies could actually catch. They put down 2 very easy ones. Colly was also plumb LBW not playing a shot ..... On TMS Geoff Boycott simply couldn't believe it wasn't given out !!

Agreed, it's just that it seems they always go against you when things are looking bad (England in Aus, Windies in this game)

Under cooked? Simply poor if you ask me. England should win this by a street.

And that's the danger of only picking 4 bowlers.

Shah fails again, and against such a poor attack to suggest that it will be while before he is seen in england colours again.

I must confess - when I'm at work and can't listen to the game I do enjoy the online commentary by Ben Dirs biggrin.gif

1854: Oh my life, that's pitched on a length, jagged back and caught Gayle slap bang in the orchestras. Down goes the big man in a heap - his missus will be weeping into her copy of Mother and Child. A few sniggers from the England fielders. What is it about a man getting hit in the testicles by a very hard ball travelling at 88mph that makes other men laugh? That's not a rhetorical question, I want answers. The physio is out - the one bonus for Gayle is it might swell up a bit for a couple of weeks. He climbs to his feet after a couple of minutes flat on his back, and the Lord's crowd rises to its feet.

How wrong can you be?

http://furius.ca/pubcode/pub/conf/common/l...n/enjot.py.html

I think this definition of the word is dull and boring. Maybe there should be an alternative definition. It could be your contribution to the English language. What would the word mean? The pleasure of listening to cricket on digital radio?

Edited because I was enjotting while writing. wink.gif

Bloddy weather ... why do we play matches in London where it always rains (p.s. the last bit is a wind up)
Andy Larter
I've not been enjotting at all this afternoon but I see from the BBC website that it's all over bar the fat lady.

The next test starts on Friday. I hope they don't rush back Vaughan & Flintoff. England don't need Freddie to bowl 3 overs & go off injured again. Both should be made to play for their counties to prove fitness before being picked to play in a test........ it won't happen though
moster
fucking hell. a re-call for sidebottom. they may as well have picked his dad.

even if headingley produces a seamers paradise, i can't see either side having enough firepower to bowl the other out twice. if hoggard & flintoff don't recover soon this series will finish 0-0.

Yes. A backward step. There are other bowlers who they could have chosen - Onions, Broad. Why him?
moster
broad is injured. but that still doesn't answer your question.
Red Star
My Notts friends tell me Ryan is bowling well. BUT it won't matter on Friday. The BBC North weather forecast is currently giving rain in the broad acres for Friday. Als Headingley isn't half as seamer friendly as it used to be. Many of Yorks wickets have been taken by our leggie Rashid who will play for England, but hopefully not for a couple of years. p.s Adil Rashid was born in Yorkshire.

Has anyone been to the Oval recently? We're going on Sunday and I'm trying to find out about the new alcohol laws and taking a picnic.
I think, from their website the game is a Category B which means we can take in booze but there is no mention anywhere about food.
When I was a lass and went to Hampshire every week we used to take huge Chez Barmy sized picnics but I know a lot has changed since then.

If they stopped people taking food into games no one would go. The cricket authorities are cutting down on the booze, but food it still OK. I do admit that it's a couple of years since I went to the Oval though.

Thanks Red Star, I thought it would still be okay but after they banned it at the World Cup I thought I better check!

watching the highlights on sky now, this is the best i've seen vaughan bat since the year when he scored about 8 thousand test runs and batted all day.

he outscored pietersen in their partnership too, despite the fact that the strike was fairly equal.

it makes you remember that the upturn in england's test fortunes coincided with MV joining the side.

i also imagine that it really irks yorkshire traditionalists that he's a lancashire lad.

i love michael vaughan. obviously not as much as monty, i mean i wouldn't want to shag him or owt if we were both gay, but i'd shake his hand firmly, like.

Vaughan did well, but then blew it as soon as he'd got a ton. MV got out to a truley awful shot.

but England have a new bowling hero. A man called Ryan biggrin.gif
.... can I say well done to Notts for teaching Mr Sidebotton (jnr) to bowl straight as he rarely did for Yorks!!

Getting a second test has also ruined a quiz question. Name a father & son who only played 1 test each. Ryan's dad played 1 test against Aus in 1985. Arnie took one wicket then went off injured
