In the run up to the election, i was wondering if any one else thought that all the political partys seem to be smack bang in the middle of the spectrum, and all really belive in the same things. It just seems to me that polotics has got so boring, they wonder why people don't vote and i think its because they are confused.
I know, im young, too young to vote infact, but through listening to billy, and what my mum tells me, there was once a time parties stood for what they really belived in and there were fearce debates. BUt now half the politions don't even turn up for parliment.

Does anyone else feel this is why the extremist partys are being more and more suported, because they are "defiened" parties? huh.gif

i can't remember a time when parties stood up for what they believed in. my recollection is that they have always pandered to populism and greed.

Don't you mean:

I can remember a time when parties stood up for what they believed in; populism and greed.

What choice do they have, often we don’t know what’s good for us. Maybe increasing taxes by 20% is the best thing for society in the long run, but you’d never get voted in if you said that. But say you’ll cut them by 20% and improve quality of life at the same time; you’ll get the votes (maybe an exaggerated example). Remember the majority isn’t always right, politicians have all day every day to understand what’s good or bad policy. We may have a few hours of our spare time, or go along with someone else’s views, but they aren’t always right.

Is greed really the reason why people go into politics, doesn’t seem a very easy way to make a living to me. Maybe it is, how do we attract good honest people? i don't know.

I’m sure there are good honest people out there, who want a chance to show us, do we want to know them,,, NO!

Very often, and I'm generalising here, people go into politics because they enjoy the power, no matter how limited it might be, the influennce over others, also no matter how limited it might be and the prestige they think it brings. But their ambitions are facilitated by the undeniable fact that most of us (also a gross generalisation) couldn't give a tinkers cuss whats going on so long as our taxes are low our wages are high and there's a new run of Big Brother coming up on Channel 4.

I think those are very generalist comments, but very true.

We seem to be our own worst enemy. I wonder though how we could change that. Maybe if we didn’t pay politicians anything and were able to pelt them with rotten vegetable every Sunday Afternoon in the town square, that might help. Might also encourage more people to take an interest in politics. laugh.gif

Nah, somebody would complain about rotten vegetables in a public space, or some such crud.

We could just insist that they keep their word and make them accountable to the electorate... Oh hang on, that is what democracy is supposed to be, isn't it?
