Hi folks,

My new CD, Return, has been mixed and mastered and is now available in its entirety for free download at www.mp3.com/davidrovics.

Why, you may ask, does Ever Reviled Records and myself want to make this new CD available for free download after we just spent several thousand dollars in the studio recording it? Don't we want to sell CDs, recoup expenses, and eat? Yes. But we believe that the most important thing is to get the music out there. If it is to have an impact, it must be heard. If it is to be heard, the Clear Channel blockade must be broken. This will probably only happen if people like you take the time and energy to spread the word.

The CD will be out in physical form by early September. Pre-ordering the CD is much appreciated. To be the first in your neighborhood to get a copy of the CD, send a check for $17 (plus $10 for each additional copy) to me at PO Box 995, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130. The theme of much of the CD is the Palestinian struggle and the right of return of Palestinian refugees. Many of the 14 tracks on the CD directly relate to this, others less directly. It was recorded Wooly Mammoth Studios in Boston, Massachusetts at the end of June, under the expertise of producer and recording artist, Sean Staples, with a bunch of great musicians. The whole project was made possible by Ever Reviled Records -- www.everreviledrecords.com. If you have ideas for how to promote this release, or you know radio programmers who would like to have a copy, or to order copies, please be encouraged to email them at info@everreviledrecords.com.

I'll be doing two big tours to promote this release. In the fall I'll be doing a tour of the eastern US and Canada, and in the winter I'll be doing a tour of the western US and Canada (I'll also be touring a bit in Europe later in the fall). The main reason I'm posting on this thread is that David Rovics doesn't belong on page 3 of billy bragg forum - other artists thread despite the fact that I'm the only person who ever posts about him.
Virtually all his stuff has been available for free download at MP3.com. As that's gone under i'll happily send anyone 700mb of the next best thing to Phil Ochs returning from the dead to anyone who asks until he gets someone else to host the files.

There is nowhere I'd rather be (even Cologne, Amsterdam or Brussels) particularly on the 13th as it's my birthday. I think it's unlikely I'll make it across the mighty ocean, as I didn't even manage to catch them together in the UK earlier this year. I was at home in Ireland and couldn't get a cheap flight, although regular playing of Pete C's excellent bootleg of Brentford means I feel like I did. I even managed to miss David when he came to Ireland a couple months ago, as I had to be in England that weekend.

I think my posting in this thread are probably to ease my guilt about failing to get a northern Irish gig arranged despite my on-going barrage of emails to various venues/promoters.

It's been pointed out to me that, thanks to the kind efforts and web space donation, a forum member has ensured that all David’s LPs can be downloaded free at the link below. I’m pretty sure there are even a few more tracks from the first LP on this site than there were on the old MP3.com site. Many thanks.

All of the songs from all of my recordings (including some web-only stuff) is now back on-line. Soon there will be a number of links there that will all lead to sites hosting all of my recordings available for free download in MP3 form. Much thanks to everyone who's been getting MP3's on-line all over the place.

Even if you're not in the Boston area you can still hear the concert this Sunday (December 14th) at 8 pm EST on-line at www.clubpassim.org. A last-minute development for this month is a benefit for NYC Indymedia in NYC on December 20th. Hey folks,

I'm in the midst of a tour of eastern Canada, just had a wonderful first visit to Halifax, Fredericton and elsewhere in the Maritimes thanks to the good people of the uberCulture Collective, and a great gig in Quebec City. Heading out next to Ontario, and then down south and west to Colorado, Utah, California and the Northwest.

I thought I'd send that out to my whole email list 'cause a big chunk of the list is out there anyway, and plus everybody seems to know someone somewhere in California. Every time I tell people I'm heading out towards California, they say, "oh, I have a brother in San Francisco" or something like that. So if you want to tell any of these people about my tour out there, feel free. Details are below. Also, on my website there's now a section with translations of a bunch of songs into French, thanks to Caroline Harvey of Montreal.

I've been spending my free time working on transcriptions to songs for the next edition of my songbook, which is going to be released on AK Press, so maybe this run will stay in print better than previous efforts... More on that later.

The show was wonderful. I have seen David Rovics a couple of times and I liked it as I always do. His guitar playing just gets better and better.

I was very surprised and pleased at Attila's show. He was hilarious and sharp - the crowd LOVED him. I hope they come back again, they're talking about an early summer tour. I'm not cooking next time though, just enjoying.

Tomorrow (April 7th) begins a series of dates around the east coast from North Carolina to Vermont, plus one in Colorado and several in Illinois. Highlights include the Caterpillar protest in Peoria, Illinois (www.stopcat.org) on April 23rd and the World Bank 60th birthday party the next day in Washington, DC (www.50years.org). All the details I have for my April tour dates are below, except for web links and contact info, which can be found in the "gigs" section of www.davidrovics.com, along with any updates or additions.

My upcoming CD, Songs for Mahmud, is done being mastered and is about to go off to the presses. It consists of 21 new songs, and all it's all just solo guitar and voice, recorded and mastered at really high-quality places in Houston, Texas. My friend and comrade Michael Rutzou is doing an amazing job with the graphics, too. You can check them out at www.davidrovics.prognet.dk and read the liner notes and such. In the next week or two MP3's of the whole thing will be up in the "audio and video" section of www.davidrovics.com for free download. The "$5 special" deal for the CD will be in effect at least until it's out, so please be encouraged to pre-order and be involved with this grassroots promotion initiative to whatever extent you may be able or willing. Details can be found in the "buy stuff" section of my website.

In addition to the efforts of individuals like yourself to pass around copies of the CD, burn them, spread around MP3's, etc., I'm happy to announce that Amanda Bellerby will be working with me on radio promotion. Thanks to all who gave me useful advice regarding databases. I think I'm soon to be all sorted with that. I did end up with an old copy of the database from last June, so "only" lost 9 months' worth or so. Once again, if you are waiting for a CD order and you haven't told me about it, I don't know about it. If you signed my email list sometime after last June, I no longer have your mailing address unless you re-sent it to me in the past week or so (though if you're receiving this message, I obviously still have your email address, which I had in a separate file).

Hey folks in Britain,

Below is the official itinerary of my tour of Britain with Attila the Stockbroker. The tour will be interrupted for a return to the US, to sing at the G8 protests in Savannah, Georgia, as well as a few days later in June in Ireland. I don't include this info below, but it can be found on the "gigs" page of www.davidrovics.com for anyone interested. Any changes to the schedule below will also appear on the website as soon as I hear about them.

The tour will start out with another appearance on Andy Kershaw's world music show on BBC Radio 3 on Friday, May 29. (For those wondering how it is that I'm on Andy's show at the same time as I'm playing a gig, it's because it's actually being pre-recorded at the studio the day before.)

Hey folks,

Just wanted to let people know that four new songs are up as MP3's at www.soundclick.com/davidrovics for free download (along with everything else I've recorded). The new songs are mostly topical songs related to recent events in the world: "After We Torture Our Prisoners," "Fallujah," "Guantanamo Bay" and "Unknown Soldier." If you are (or know) a radio programmer and would like a CD of these songs, you can request a copy from John Fabiani at jfabiani@sbcglobal.net.

I've been spending the past couple days packing boxes and envelopes with my new CD, Songs for Mahmud. (And with the past few weeks of genocidal warfare against the people of Gaza, there are unfortunately so many more Mahmuds to write about, each worth so much more than a song -- great ongoing coverage at www.democracynow.org and www.flashpoints.net.) I'm going to extend the $5 per CD for orders of 2 or more for orders up through the end of May. Details in the "buy stuff" section of www.davidrovics.com.

There's a heck of a lot of amazing videographers and documentarians and such out there, and I'd like to mention a few. New Spark Productions -- www.newsparkproductions.org -- is doing great stuff around a variety of issues, including the upcoming protests at the DNC, RNC and especially the march in between. Tom Jackson is going on a trip soon to Afghanistan. In Iraq and elsewhere he's done some amazing video work. There are great shorts to watch on his website, www.joepublicfilms.com. Check out his great work, order some videos (Greetings From Missile Street is great) and help him get to Afghanistan, please.

I want to mention a hip hop band I had the honor of performing with a month or two ago. Their new CD is on Ever Reviled Records, and it's absolutely fantastic. Check out the Thought Breakers at www.thoughtbreakers.com. (I've got a link to their site and some other fab musicians on my "links" page, btw.)

Lastly, thanks to Ciro Biggi of Sao Paulo there are now Portuguese translations to a bunch of song in the "song translations" of my website.

Updated UK/Ireland tour dates in his latest newsletter below;



Hey folks in Britain,

I'm in the midst of a fine tour of Britain, mostly with the lovely and talented Attila the Stockbroker. The updated itinerary is below. Changes involve the addition of three events, and the cancellation of the Leeds gig that was to be on June 20th.

The additional events are a concert with Seize the Day and other folks in Bristol this Monday night, a show in north London on Tuesday night, and a protest rally/art show against BP on the 16th. For more on the latter, check out www.londonrisingtide.org.uk. Vital info for the gigs in Bristol and London can be found below.

Some of you may have noticed that the appearance on the Andy Kershaw show hasn't happened yet. I did record a few songs at the BBC studio with the good folks there, and they'll apparently be airing in Andy's show later in the month.

OK, here's the updated itinerary. Hope to see folks out there somewhere!

i'll have a go at recording it. Alberr has re-installed total recorder on my desktop (thanks for the tip heather) but when i used it the other day i didn't noticed what drive it saved to and i haven't found the file yet (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
