David's new CD will be released in September but in an act, which is a mix of immense generosity, applied socialism, and, quite possibly, crass commercial stupidity he's made all the tracks available at;
www.mp3.com/davidrovics His latest newsletter is below; Hi folks, My new CD, Return, has been mixed and mastered and is now available in its entirety for free download at www.mp3.com/davidrovics. Why, you may ask, does Ever Reviled Records and myself want to make this new CD available for free download after we just spent several thousand dollars in the studio recording it? Don't we want to sell CDs, recoup expenses, and eat? Yes. But we believe that the most important thing is to get the music out there. If it is to have an impact, it must be heard. If it is to be heard, the Clear Channel blockade must be broken. This will probably only happen if people like you take the time and energy to spread the word. The CD will be out in physical form by early September. Pre-ordering the CD is much appreciated. To be the first in your neighborhood to get a copy of the CD, send a check for $17 (plus $10 for each additional copy) to me at PO Box 995, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130. For wholesale orders and other such information, go to www.davidrovics.com and click on "buy stuff." The theme of much of the CD is the Palestinian struggle and the right of return of Palestinian refugees. Many of the 14 tracks on the CD directly relate to this, others less directly. It was recorded Wooly Mammoth Studios in Boston, Massachusetts at the end of June, under the expertise of producer and recording artist, Sean Staples, with a bunch of great musicians. The whole project was made possible by Ever Reviled Records -- www.everreviledrecords.com. If you have ideas for how to promote this release, or you know radio programmers who would like to have a copy, or to order copies, please be encouraged to email them at info@everreviledrecords.com. I'll be doing two big tours to promote this release. In the fall I'll be doing a tour of the eastern US and Canada, and in the winter I'll be doing a tour of the western US and Canada (I'll also be touring a bit in Europe later in the fall). To see where I'll be playing in your area go to www.davidrovics.com and click on "gigs." If you might want to organize an event yourself, feel free to go to my website and click on "booking" for more thoughts on that, and to contact me by any of the methods provided below. On my website you'll also find lyrics to everything, liner notes to the CDs, more audio and video you can download, links to other artists, and lots of other stuff. Also, thanks to Rupert and DC Indymedia, the digital version of my songbook is now up on my website, so you can download and print out the lyrics, chords and sheet music to everything in it (for free). Go to my website and click on "lyrics and sheet music" to find it. Hope to see you on the road and in the streets! --David [To be removed from my email list just reply to this message and tell me to unsubscribe you.] David Rovics www.davidrovics.com rovics@greens.org (617) 747-4460 (voicemail) (617) 872-5124 (cell phone) PO Box 995 Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 (USA) "Lying and war are always associated. The main reason I'm posting on this thread is that David Rovics doesn't belong on page 3 of billy bragg forum - other artists thread despite the fact that I'm the only person who ever posts about him.
Virtually all his stuff has been available for free download at MP3.com. As that's gone under i'll happily send anyone 700mb of the next best thing to Phil Ochs returning from the dead to anyone who asks until he gets someone else to host the files. Cheers Steve |

Steve, come to Detroit on March 11, 12 or 13 (we're still working it out) and see David Rovics and Attila the Stockbroker in concert at a venue to be decided probably later today at a lunch meeting I'm going to beg off from attending.
In Miami at the FTAA protests Billy played David Rovics guitar. I think Tom Morello did too. So there! Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. |

There is nowhere I'd rather be (even Cologne, Amsterdam or Brussels) particularly on the 13th as it's my birthday. I think it's unlikely I'll make it across the mighty ocean, as I didn't even manage to catch them together in the UK earlier this year. I was at home in Ireland and couldn't get a cheap flight, although regular playing of Pete C's excellent bootleg of Brentford means I feel like I did. I even managed to miss David when he came to Ireland a couple months ago, as I had to be in England that weekend.
I think my posting in this thread are probably to ease my guilt about failing to get a northern Irish gig arranged despite my on-going barrage of emails to various venues/promoters. It's been pointed out to me that, thanks to the kind efforts and web space donation, a forum member has ensured that all David’s LPs can be downloaded free at the link below. I’m pretty sure there are even a few more tracks from the first LP on this site than there were on the old MP3.com site. Many thanks. http://hillstrom.iww.org/music/david_rovics/ This post has been edited by Steve Andrews: Dec 7 2003, 10:38 AM |

Latest newsletter below;
Hey folks, A few music-related announcements for all interested... All of the songs from all of my recordings (including some web-only stuff) is now back on-line. Just go to www.davidrovics.com then click on "audio and video on-line" and you'll come to the link first thing. Soon there will be a number of links there that will all lead to sites hosting all of my recordings available for free download in MP3 form. Much thanks to everyone who's been getting MP3's on-line all over the place. Even if you're not in the Boston area you can still hear the concert this Sunday (December 14th) at 8 pm EST on-line at www.clubpassim.org. Of course, if you're in the Boston area, I hope to see you there on Sunday. Info on that and other upcoming gigs can be found under "gigs" on www.davidrovics.com. A last-minute development for this month is a benefit for NYC Indymedia in NYC on December 20th. Read more about NYC Indymedia getting their equipment destroyed by the Miami police at www.indymedia.org (then go to "New York City" on the bar to the left). I'll also be on WBAI's "radio-thon" at 1:30 EST on Saturday, which you can hear live on the web at www.wbai.org. All the dates for my tour of the Maritimes starting at the end of this month are up on my website. If you know anybody in eastern Canada, feel free to send 'em my way. After that I'll be heading west towards Colorado, Utah, California and other points west. Many more dates are coming together, but there are still plenty of free dates all over the western US, if anybody's interested in organizing something. Today is the official release date for Behind the Barricades: the Best of David Rovics, on AK Press/Daemon Records. They've been doing all kinds of promotion for this release, and I'm just tickled. If you know any radio programmers who might want to play it or people in other media who might want a review copy, feel free to contact the folks at Daemon Records about that. You can email stacey@daemonrecords.com. (Same goes for my October release, Return -- email info@everreviledrecords.com.) Ten years ago yesterday John Lennon was murdered. Here's to you, John. OK, guess I'll sign off for now. Hope to see you on the road and in the streets. I keep forgetting to check this forum! Thanks for all the updates, Steve. David tells me that he will be touring the Midwest US in March and is looking for more gigs to fill the holes. With him will be Attila the Stockbroker -- who I'm sure many of the posters here are familiar with. I always look forward to seeing David, but I'll be especially happy if I get to see him and Attila together!

Yipee!
TI think that after a year of nagging I might have finally persuaded The Real Music Club in Belfast to book David. I emailed them today and It looks like the Attila/Rovics 'dream ticket' (?) might have finally tempted them. Cheers Steve David's latest news letter is below; Hey folks, I'm in the midst of a tour of eastern Canada, just had a wonderful first visit to Halifax, Fredericton and elsewhere in the Maritimes thanks to the good people of the uberCulture Collective, and a great gig in Quebec City. Heading out next to Ontario, and then down south and west to Colorado, Utah, California and the Northwest. I thought I'd send that out to my whole email list 'cause a big chunk of the list is out there anyway, and plus everybody seems to know someone somewhere in California. Every time I tell people I'm heading out towards California, they say, "oh, I have a brother in San Francisco" or something like that. So if you want to tell any of these people about my tour out there, feel free. Details are below. More details on these gigs and any changes or additions to 'em that may happen can be found in the "gigs" section of www.davidrovics.com. Also, on my website there's now a section with translations of a bunch of songs into French, thanks to Caroline Harvey of Montreal. I've been spending my free time working on transcriptions to songs for the next edition of my songbook, which is going to be released on AK Press, so maybe this run will stay in print better than previous efforts... Tomorrow night, David Rovics and Attila the Stockbroker in beautiful midtown Detroit, in the Cass Corridor, a benefit for the Fifth Estate newspaper, with a pre-concert dinner featuring food cooked by the Detroit Wobbly Kitchen and, erm, me (I'm soupmaker for the stars tomorrow night). It should be fun, if you're in the midwest come to Detroit!

The show was wonderful. I have seen David Rovics a couple of times and I liked it as I always do. His guitar playing just gets better and better.
I was very surprised and pleased at Attila's show. He was hilarious and sharp - the crowd LOVED him. I hope they come back again, they're talking about an early summer tour. I'm not cooking next time though, just enjoying. |

His latest enewsletterwatzit;
Hi folks, Tomorrow (April 7th) begins a series of dates around the east coast from North Carolina to Vermont, plus one in Colorado and several in Illinois. Highlights include the Caterpillar protest in Peoria, Illinois (www.stopcat.org) on April 23rd and the World Bank 60th birthday party the next day in Washington, DC (www.50years.org). All the details I have for my April tour dates are below, except for web links and contact info, which can be found in the "gigs" section of www.davidrovics.com, along with any updates or additions. My upcoming CD, Songs for Mahmud, is done being mastered and is about to go off to the presses. It consists of 21 new songs, and all it's all just solo guitar and voice, recorded and mastered at really high-quality places in Houston, Texas. My friend and comrade Michael Rutzou is doing an amazing job with the graphics, too. You can check them out at www.davidrovics.prognet.dk and read the liner notes and such. In the next week or two MP3's of the whole thing will be up in the "audio and video" section of www.davidrovics.com for free download. The "$5 special" deal for the CD will be in effect at least until it's out, so please be encouraged to pre-order and be involved with this grassroots promotion initiative to whatever extent you may be able or willing. Details can be found in the "buy stuff" section of my website. In addition to the efforts of individuals like yourself to pass around copies of the CD, burn them, spread around MP3's, etc., I'm happy to announce that Amanda Bellerby will be working with me on radio promotion. Amanda is a kick-ass media activist out in northern California. If you have ideas you want to share with her about radio promotion, feel free to email her at mugwort@mcn.org. Also, Ever Reviled Records will once again be involved with this CD release, doing promotion and taking care of wholesale orders and other things. Check them out at www.everreviledrecords.com. Thanks to all who gave me useful advice regarding databases. I think I'm soon to be all sorted with that. I did end up with an old copy of the database from last June, so "only" lost 9 months' worth or so. Thanks to the hundreds of folks who sent me their contact info and reminded me of CD orders that I haven't filled yet. Once again, if you are waiting for a CD order and you haven't told me about it, I don't know about it. If you signed my email list sometime after last June, I no longer have your mailing address unless you re-sent it to me in the past week or so (though if you're receiving this message, I obviously still have your email address, which I had in a separate file). OK, the April dates are below. But lastly, one more plug for events this summer... If you go to my "gigs" page and scroll down to June, July and August you'll find links to relevant websites. I hope to see many of you out on the east coast for the G8 protests in Savannah, Georgia, the protests at the Democratic National Convention in Boston in late July (and other events at that time -- the Boston Social Forum and the conventions of the Alliance for Democracy and Veterans for Peace), the Republican National Convention protests in NYC in late August, and the DNC to RNC march (www.dnc2rnc.org) going on in between the two ruling party conventions throughout the month of August! (On my "gigs" page you'll also find details about my tour of Washington State in May, a KPFT backyard party in Houston, my tour of Britain with Attila the Stockbroker from late May to late June, and other stuff. More on those events in future emails...) APRIL DATES: Wednesday, April 7th, 8 pm, Julian Abele Hall in the Mary Lou Williams Center, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. Thursday, April 8th, 7:30 pm, in the outdoor amphitheater at American University (if raining, it'll be in the Tavern), Washington, DC. This will be part of the closing ceremonies for Palestine Awareness Week. Saturday, April 10th, Storyville, Durango, Colorado. Monday, April 12th, 8 pm, Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont. Tuesday, April 13th, 8 pm, Alumni Hall, Western Connecticut State University, Danbury, Connecticut. This will be one of my friend Terry's classes, and will include facilitated discussion as well as songs, but it is open to the public. Friday, April 16th, 8 pm, First Presbyterian Church, 704 Whitney Avenue, New Haven, Connecticut. Me and Lui Collins. Saturday, April 17th, 7 pm, 148 Forest St., Montclair, New Jersey. House concert, benefit concert for the Bergen Action Network. Sunday, April 18th, workshop from 2-5 pm, concert at 7 pm, The Unitarian Church of Harrisburg, 1280 Clover Lane, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Monday, April 19th, Baltimore, Maryland -- TENTATIVE. Tuesday, April 20th, 7 pm, Ramapo College, Mahwah, New Jersey. Wednesday, April 21st, 7 pm, Chase Center, Vermont Law School, South Royalton, Vermont. Thursday, April 22nd, 8 pm, Peoria, Illinois -- details TBA. Friday, April 23rd, noon, Stop Cat protest against Caterpillar and their illegal export of armored bulldozers to Israel, Peoria, Illinois . I'll be there along with Cindy and Craig Corrie and many others, hopefully including you! April 24th, 50 Years Is Enough celebrates the 60th anniversary of the World Bank in Washington, DC -- details TBA. Monday, April 26th, 8 pm, Allen Hall, 1005 W. Gregory, Univeristy of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois. Saturday, May 1st, 11 am to 11 pm, SolarFest, University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire. Me and lots of other bands and other stuff going on, all solar-powered. Sunday, May 2nd, 3-6 pm May Day (almost) songfest, Washington, DC -- details TBA. Saturday, May 8, Ottawa, Ontario -- details TBA. Hope to see you on the road and in the streets! --David [To be removed from my email list just reply to this message and tell me to unsubscribe you.] David Rovics drovics@aol.com (617) 747-4460 (voicemail) (617) 872-5124 (cell) PO Box 995 Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 www.davidrovics.com www.everreviledrecords.com www.akpress.org www.daemonrecords.com www.soundclick.com/davidrovics www.folkweb.com/davidrovics |

4 new songs have just been put up at;
http://www.soundclick.com/davidrovics His latest 2 newsletters are below; 1 - 21 May 2004 19:36 Hey folks in Britain, Below is the official itinerary of my tour of Britain with Attila the Stockbroker. The tour will be interrupted for a return to the US, to sing at the G8 protests in Savannah, Georgia, as well as a few days later in June in Ireland. I don't include this info below, but it can be found on the "gigs" page of www.davidrovics.com for anyone interested. Any changes to the schedule below will also appear on the website as soon as I hear about them. The tour will start out with another appearance on Andy Kershaw's world music show on BBC Radio 3 on Friday, May 29. (For those wondering how it is that I'm on Andy's show at the same time as I'm playing a gig, it's because it's actually being pre-recorded at the studio the day before.) Hope to see you all soon! Please feel free to tell your friends and relatives about the tour! Yours, David May 29 GLASTONWICK BEER FEST http://www.cask-ale.co.uk/beerfestival.html May 30 NEWCASTLE Free Festival rc002d5241@blueyonder.co.uk May 31 GLASGOW Mono C.Tannock@btinternet.com June 1 (12 noon) Glasgow Caledonian University Centre for Political Song J.McNair@gcal.ac.uk June 1 Evening Edinburgh Tron Theatre jem@bigword.fsnet.co.uk June 2 BERWICK ON TWEED Barrels Alehouse mark.dixon8@btinternet.com June 3 BRADFORD 1 in 12 Club protag@neish.demon.co.uk June 4 GLOSSOP The Globe darren@poyzer.com June 5 HARLOW Victoria Hall cliff.moore1@btopenworld.com also with Robb Johnson June 6 PORTSMOUTH Milton Arms Mike.Chivers@unisonfree.net June 10 BATH Invention Arts debs@inventionarts.org June 11 EXETER North Bridge Inn http://www.northbridgeinn.co.uk June 12 DOVER Metzo's david@rumsey-ink.co.uk June 13 BRIGHTON Evening Star (solo gig, afternoon) matt@eveningstarbrighton.co.uk June 17 HEREFORD Barrels musicpool@btconnect.com June 18 ABERYSTWYTH TBC kelvin.mason@tiscali.co.uk June 19 LLANGOLLEN SUN INN sunninnllangollen@btopenworld.com June 20 MIDDLEWICH Folk & Boat Festival (2-4 pm) June 20 June LEEDS The Bassment June 20 LEEDS TBC yow52@yahoo.com June 25-June 27 Glastonbury Festival [To be removed from my email list just reply to this message and tell me to unsubscribe you.] David Rovics drovics@aol.com (617) 747-4460 (voicemail) (617) 872-5124 (cell) PO Box 995 Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 www.davidrovics.com www.everreviledrecords.com www.akpress.org www.daemonrecords.com www.soundclick.com/davidrovics www.folkweb.com/davidrovics www.cdbaby.com/all/davidrovics 2 - 23 May 2004 04:45 Hey folks, Just wanted to let people know that four new songs are up as MP3's at www.soundclick.com/davidrovics for free download (along with everything else I've recorded). The new songs are mostly topical songs related to recent events in the world: "After We Torture Our Prisoners," "Fallujah," "Guantanamo Bay" and "Unknown Soldier." If you are (or know) a radio programmer and would like a CD of these songs, you can request a copy from John Fabiani at jfabiani@sbcglobal.net. I've been spending the past couple days packing boxes and envelopes with my new CD, Songs for Mahmud. (And with the past few weeks of genocidal warfare against the people of Gaza, there are unfortunately so many more Mahmuds to write about, each worth so much more than a song -- great ongoing coverage at www.democracynow.org and www.flashpoints.net.) I'm going to extend the $5 per CD for orders of 2 or more for orders up through the end of May. Details in the "buy stuff" section of www.davidrovics.com. There's a heck of a lot of amazing videographers and documentarians and such out there, and I'd like to mention a few. New Spark Productions -- www.newsparkproductions.org -- is doing great stuff around a variety of issues, including the upcoming protests at the DNC, RNC and especially the march in between. Check out their short video mid-way down on their website. Also check out www.dnc2rnc.org! Tom Jackson is going on a trip soon to Afghanistan. In Iraq and elsewhere he's done some amazing video work. There are great shorts to watch on his website, www.joepublicfilms.com. Check out his great work, order some videos (Greetings From Missile Street is great) and help him get to Afghanistan, please. I want to mention a hip hop band I had the honor of performing with a month or two ago. Their new CD is on Ever Reviled Records, and it's absolutely fantastic. Check out the Thought Breakers at www.thoughtbreakers.com. (I've got a link to their site and some other fab musicians on my "links" page, btw.) Lastly, thanks to Ciro Biggi of Sao Paulo there are now Portuguese translations to a bunch of song in the "song translations" of my website. OK, I'm off to Europe in a few days. For details go to the "gigs" section... Read some drivel about my travels in the "blog" section, if you're really bored... If anybody wants to call me in Europe, I'll have a cell phone over there. (Info in the "contact" section of my site.) See you on the road and in the streets! --David [To be removed from my email list just reply to this message and tell me to unsubscribe you.] David Rovics drovics@aol.com (617) 747-4460 (voicemail) (617) 872-5124 (cell) PO Box 995 Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 www.davidrovics.com www.everreviledrecords.com www.akpress.org www.daemonrecords.com www.soundclick.com/davidrovics www.folkweb.com/davidrovics www.cdbaby.com/all/davidrovics This post has been edited by Steve Andrews: May 23 2004, 09:01 AM |

Updated UK/Ireland tour dates in his latest newsletter below;
Hey folks in Britain, I'm in the midst of a fine tour of Britain, mostly with the lovely and talented Attila the Stockbroker. The updated itinerary is below. Changes involve the addition of three events, and the cancellation of the Leeds gig that was to be on June 20th. The additional events are a concert with Seize the Day and other folks in Bristol this Monday night, a show in north London on Tuesday night, and a protest rally/art show against BP on the 16th. For more on the latter, check out www.londonrisingtide.org.uk. Vital info for the gigs in Bristol and London can be found below. Some of you may have noticed that the appearance on the Andy Kershaw show hasn't happened yet. I did record a few songs at the BBC studio with the good folks there, and they'll apparently be airing in Andy's show later in the month. OK, here's the updated itinerary. Hope to see folks out there somewhere! --David June 6 PORTSMOUTH Milton Arms Mike.Chivers@unisonfree.net June 7 BRISTOL (without Attila -- with Seize the Day and others) 8:30 pm, The Thekla, East Mud Dock, The Grove 07939 061 922 June 8 LONDON (without Attila), 8:30, 156-158 Fortess Road, Tufnell Park michael_bakunin@hotmail.com June 10 BATH Invention Arts debs@inventionarts.org June 11 EXETER North Bridge Inn http://www.northbridgeinn.co.uk June 12 DOVER Matzo's david@rumsey-ink.co.uk June 13 BRIGHTON Evening Star (solo gig, afternoon) matt@eveningstarbrighton.co.uk June 17 HEREFORD Barrels musicpool@btconnect.com June 18 ABERYSTWYTH Bae Hotel kelvin.mason@tiscali.co.uk June 19 LLANGOLLEN SUN INN sunninnllangollen@btopenworld.com June 20 MIDDLEWICH Folk & Boat Festival (2-4 pm) www.middlewichfestival.org June 20 June LEEDS The Bassment June 21-23, Ireland -- details TBA June 25-June 27 Glastonbury Festival |
