I need an English Premier League team to root for.

I am a huge fan of sports here in the US. I probably enjoy the US version of football the best with basketball following close behind. One of the things I enjoy most about sports is rooting for specific teams, following their performance over a season, getting to know the players, and learning about the team’s history and tradition. I also love rooting against teams, in particular the rival of my rooting interest.

While I grew up watching US sports and supporting US sports teams, my size dictated that I grew up playing soccer (I am neither 6’5” nor 250 lbs., prerequisites for US football and basketball). I love soccer and watch whenever it is on here in the US (I missed almost a month of sleep during the 2004 World Cup because the games were on so late here).

Well, I got satellite TV about two months ago and as part of my package, I received the Fox Soccer Channel, which allowed me to watch a fair number of games from the end of the English Premier League season. While I enjoyed watching the games a great deal, I now realize that in order to take my relationship with the sport to a new level, I will need a love interest, one I can cultivate in the off-season so I am ready to jump in with both feet at the start of the next season.

So, woo me with your favorite team. Who should I root for and why? Who should I hate and why?

Whatever you do, don't decide to support man u. Why? Christ how long have you got? You do meet the main criteria for supporting them though. You don't live anywhere near manchester.

Chelski come a close second in teams not to support.

Why not choose a team with 'west' in their name? They're quite popular around here.

btw, why does it have to be a premiership side?

boing, boing.

if you are going to support anybody in the premiership, make it west ham, it is uncle bill's team. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

because outside of blighty, they are the only ones you are going to ever see playing on a screen anywhere. listening to webcasts (or in lots of cases, watching websites update every 90 seconds) for the last two years ain't been fun.

Alternatively,if you want to support a team in the top half of the league, may i suggest God's own football team Tottenham Hotspur. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

I reckon you should support PALACE!

They'll be back up next year without a doubt everyone loves the excitment at the bottom esp when they make it up to the top!!

Besides that Spurs (Tottenham) Is a good team also - (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thanks for the replies so far!!

My thoughts thus far...

I have followed (though not necessarily rooted for) Man U for a number of years -- I liked Cantona's game, though not him personally. He played like I did, with enough determination to overcome a lack of physical gifts.

Chelski (I assume that's a play on Chelsea given the ownership) annoys me. Its hard to root for a team that buys its championships, yet they are a very impressive side. I am glad they weren't in the FA cup.

It has to be an EPL team rather than a lower division team because that is all we get on satellite here in the US.

Beyond being Bill's team what does West Ham have to offer in the way of current players' skills and personalities, and in terms of tradition or history? Plus, not being Premier makes it had to follow them from here.

Tottenham's a possibility. A friend of mine brought me home a Hotspur scarf after visiting many years ago. I need to know more about them.

While its fun watching teams climb back to the top, Palace's relegation would mean I'd need to go a season without seeing them.

I recently read Hornby's "Fever Pitch" -- a good read, I'll add. What about Arsenal? Any supporters or haters?

Arsenal football club were originally from Woolwich,South London. They were called Woolwich Arsenal FC .They moved up to Islington,North London (Tottenhams area) in 1913.

Thats where the expression, South London traveller comes from.

Yay, Go for the Gooners!

Given that you want a premiership side that is, and I can understand why.

LeftintheUS - West Ham are now in the Premier, they were promoted last season.

Your other questions and queries require someone with far greater football knowledge and stuff than me to help you with. Well, I am a West Brom fan. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

anyone who can get away with being called 'the irons' and still be hard, deserve respect.

(cockney rhyming slang, iron hoof. poof)

....(IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

i didn't know klf was a spurs fan, either.

if its got to be a london team, maybe you should go for Charlton. mostly harmless. and they need all the support they can get.

other than that, i think Birmingham city are worth following, just to annoy Matt W (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

under no circumstances choose to follow the crystal paralysis. it will give you years of depression and misery. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Lefty, I can't help you with a team, but I am amused by the use of the term "to root for". In Australia, "to root" means a totally different thing! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Rooting vs. rooting... I remember when my college football (American) team won the National Championship. I can't say for certain that that feeling didn't top an orgasm (can I say that word here?)!!
