2012 Dates

The first gig of 2012 announced via punknews.org

UK hardcore alumnus and singer songwriter Frank Turner has reported, via his Facebook status, that none other than Billy Bragg will be supporting him at London's Wembley Arena, on the 13th of April, 2012. Turner writes:

"Absolutely over the moon to be able to announce that the legendary Billy Bragg will be playing with me at Wembley next year!"

Both musicians have spoken at length about how punk ideals they came to in their youth affect their work (Bragg as a Clash fan, Turner through hardcore), both mix political material with more slice of life fare, and both have made a point of examining the concept of Englishness in their work. Only one has a beard.

Austin 2010

Reposting from the Harvest of Hope thread.

The festival where I saw Billy yesterday was a free festival called MWTX in Austin. It used to be called Mess with Texas, but they had to change the name due to copyright issues. Anyway, there were probably 40 or 50 bands on two stages and no one got to play for very long. I think 30 minutes, maybe.
Although it was a short gig, it was my first time to see BB and it brilliant, amazing, awesome. He was on message the entire time and urged us to keep fighting and to encourage our representatives in Congress to support Obama, even going so far as to draw a parallel to (American) football. :-0 Obama's just the quarterback, he can't win the game alone when has the other team's offense (we'll forgive the technical fuzziness) coming at him from all sides.

He also remarked that when he was first in TX with Echo and the Bunnymen, they ordered tea somewhere and were culturally insulted when it was served to them iced. "When I went home and had American friends come visit, I served them boiling Coca Cola."

He played (from memory and sort of in order):
Help Save the Youth of America
World Turned Upside Down
All You Fascists
I Ain't Got no Home in this World Anymore (also Guthrie)
NPWA
There is Power in a Union
I Keep Faith
A New England (which we sang so poorly, he stopped and made us all start over)

I may be missing a few. Maybe Heather can help out with that- we met up there. She is the best!

[attachmentid=7311]

Pressure Drop

I think the Pressure Drop venture should have its own discussion page....

Anyway, here is the latest press release for it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Billy Bragg Feels Pressure with First Theatre Show
Date: 15 March 2010

Billy Bragg and his band will appear at the Wellcome Collection from 19 April to 12 May 2010 in Pressure Drop, a ‘part play, part gig, part installation’ with original music and songs by Bragg. It marks the museum’s first-ever major theatrical production and Bragg’s theatrical debut.

The promenade drama was written by author and director Mick Gordon and is directed by Christopher Haydon. Gordon, who received the Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising Newcomer in 1998 while artistic director of the Gate, approached Bragg after reading the legendary singer’s book The Progressive Patriot and becoming fascinated by his exploration of what it means to be English.

The play tells the story of three generations of a white Working-class family living on the edge of London, charting their attempts to define their individual and family identities in the context of a rapidly evolving social landscape.

Joining Bragg and his band on stage, the accomplished company of actors will comprise June Watson, Michael Gould, Justin Salinger, Pip Donaghy, David Kennedy, Susan Vidler and Shea Davis.

Pressure Drop is presented by Gordon’s company, On Theatre, and forms part of the Wellcome Trust’s Identity Project, a nine-month season of activities focused on the topic of human identity which includes performances, films, artworks, exhibitions and discussion events taking place across the UK. The play follows the Wellcome Collection’s current exhibition, Identity: Eight rooms, nine lives, which has been running since 26 November 2009.
Bragg has commented that he has “never done anything like this before; mixing songs with theatre is a totally new experience for me. Given that music makes a significant contribution to many people's sense of who they are, I am very excited to be working with On Theatre and Wellcome Collection as part of the Identity Project”.

Clare Matterson, director of medicine, society and history at the Wellcome Trust, has added that “Mick Gordon and Billy Bragg raise topical questions about human identity in contemporary Britain. Pressure Drop is a thought-provoking production. It will undoubtedly be a highlight of The Identity Project and a milestone for Wellcome Collection as its first major theatrical production”.

Although not explicitly political in its intentions, Pressure Drop adds another voice to the current theatrical debate on white working-class identity and the rise of nationalism. Recent and current plays exploring this issue include Philip Ridley’s Moonfleece, which is touring the UK until 17 April and Anders Lustgarten’s A Day at the Racists, running at the Finborough until 27 March.

Having trouble pinning down the exact time and venue for the BB/JGD performance at SXSW this month. SXSW website says Billy's playing March 17 at 1:00am at a place called Prague. FB post said March 19, 11:00pm at the Ghost Room. There's no mention of JGD on the SXSW website, and no mention of either BB or JGD on the Ghost Room's site. Prague doesn't appear to have a website.

Does anyone out there know which of these dates and venues is correct? I have never seen BB live and REALLY want to go.

Thanks in advance!

Tolpuddle 10

I don't know if this is the soonest start to a Tolpuddle thread ever but I guess it's pretty soon.

After this years gazeebo debacle and a couple of other issues discussed by the hardy souls who made it this year, I want to organise a fund for a communal gazeebo.

Shadin and I for two, and I don't think we're alone in this, feel that it is unfair that BTP goes to all the trouble of buying, bringing and erecting the gazeebo. On that basis and after doing a straw poll of those there we want to get a fund together to pay for a suitably substantial and quality gazeebo for all of us to use. I am happy to purchase it and organise the collection of donations to the fund to pay for it and the camping pass to go with it. Also, I am prepared to get it there and erect it, due to the fact I am one of the first to get there usually.

I have already made some preliminary enquiries and have found this.................

It is 6M X 3M and measuring against my dining room it would be perfectly adequate to get us all in. All the sides are removable so it will work for us whatever the weather. Plus it's only £100. Add to that the cost of the camping pass it wouldn't cost us all too much each if everyone makes a contribution.

Please let me know if you are prepared to contribute and as soon as I have it all costed I will let you know our address so you can send me a cheque.

Cheers, Andy.
